What Is an External Attack Surface and Why Should You Monitor It?

Every internet-facing asset your organisation operates is part of your external attack surface. Understanding what that includes — and how it changes — is the first step toward meaningful security.

Your external attack surface is the sum of all internet-facing assets that could potentially be targeted by an attacker. This includes web servers, mail servers, DNS infrastructure, cloud resources, VPN endpoints, API gateways, and any other system accessible from the public internet.

Why It Matters

Most organisations significantly underestimate the size of their external attack surface. Shadow IT, forgotten subdomains, test environments left running, and cloud resources provisioned outside standard processes all contribute to an attack surface that is larger — and changes more frequently — than many teams realise.

What Changes Your Attack Surface

Your attack surface is not static. Common events that alter it include:

  • New subdomain creation for marketing campaigns or development environments
  • Cloud resource provisioning across multiple providers
  • Software updates that change exposed services or open new ports
  • Certificate renewals and expirations that affect HTTPS coverage
  • Third-party integrations that introduce new endpoints
  • DNS changes that modify how traffic reaches your infrastructure

The Case for Continuous Monitoring

Annual penetration tests provide a point-in-time view. Between assessments, your attack surface continues to evolve. Continuous monitoring bridges this gap by maintaining a current inventory of your internet-facing assets and alerting you when changes occur that could introduce risk.

This does not replace manual penetration testing — it complements it. Monitoring provides ongoing visibility, while penetration testing provides depth. Together, they offer a more complete security picture than either approach alone.
